    2007 Game Updates - SCSU

Beginning with Danville's first game on Monday, May 14th, you may read about all the action of each game throughout the season.

    Danville Sweeps Eliot for Championship!!

Danville won the C Division Championship in the SCSU by defeating Eliot Baptist in two games.  But it wasn't easy.

Following their 7th inning victory on Monday, August 13th, Danville hosted Eliot Baptist on Tuesday, August 14th.
The game did not start out well for Danville, as Eliot scored 6 runs in the first, and 4 runs in the second to take a 10-1 lead.  Danville mustered just one run in the first inning, and after three and a half innings of play, Danville trailed 10-1.  It appeared a third game would be necessary to determine the championship.  But over the final four innings, Danville staged a remarkable comeback, outscoring Eliot 12-2.  The comeback began in the home half of the fourth inning, as Lou Cegerra, Bob Richfield, and Ernie Sharpe all singled.
Sacrifice flies by Neal Matthews & Wayne Dinsmore plated two runs before Phil Clark's double added a third run.  In the next inning, Danville added two more runs as Pastor Jim Smith singled with two outs, & moved to third on a hit by Lou Cegerra.  Bob Richfield's hit made the score 10-6.  Danville still trailed after five complete innings of play, but the momentum was turning.  Eliot did score a run in the top of the sixth(their first run since the second inning) to push the lead to five.  But Danville responded with a six run 6th inning to grab a one run lead.  Phil Clark & John Edwinson began the 6th with consecutive singles.  The next batter hit a soft liner over the pitchers head which dropped in front of second base, advancing the runners.  The umpire had declared an infield fly so the batter was out.  The next hitter, Derick Yeager hit a double to bring Danville within three.  Phil Hannon followed with a single that move Derick to third base.
Pastor Jim Smith than looped a hit to right field that scored a run.  Lou Cegerra followed with a triple that tied the score.  Ernie Sharpe's single would give Danville their first lead of the night, 12-11.

Going into the 7th inning Danville & Eliot found themselves in familiar territory - a one run game.  Danville & Eliot had played three games prior to this, and all three were one runs games
that were won in the last inning.  This game would be no different.  Eliot began the inning with back to back singles, putting runners on the corners.
But Danville's defense arose to the challenge, allowing just the runner from third to score.  The game was now tied at 12, as Danville came to bat needing just one run for the championship trophy.  Phil Clark (a perfect 3 for 3 with a walk) led off the inning with a single.  John Edwinson & Dave Stewart
followed with walks.  The bases were loaded with no one out, and Danville's bench was alive with anticipation.  The anticipated celebration was put on a temporary hold as Eliot recorded an out by inducing a popup.  But Phil Hannon wasted no time in securing the win for Danville, as his laced the first pitch into left center field for the game winning hit.  Danville had won the championship with an amazing comeback from a 10-1 defecit after just two innings of play.  Leading the attack with three hits apiece for Danville were Phil Hannon, Pastor Jim Smith, Lou Cegerra, Bob Richfield, Ernie Sharpe, and Phil Clark.

After the game, Pastor Smith commented, "I shouldn't have been surprised that this game would come down to the last at bat since every game against Eliot this year was decided by one run in the final inning.  I tip my hat to Danville for their remarkable comeback tonight, and for a great year and playoffs.  And I certainly congratulate Eliot.  Our games could not have been any more evenly matched.  They are a great team and a tremendous witness to this league."

Danville & Eliot Baptist in Finals:

Danville opened a best of three final playoff round against Eliot Baptist on Monday, August 13th in Somersworth.
Game # 1 is recapped below.

Game 1: Danville wins in 7th!

The playoff action between Danville and Eliot Baptist (EB)picked up where it left off in the regular season - with the winning team winning in its last at bat by one run.

Danville was the visiting team, & they opened up the game by scoring six runs in the first inning.  Phil Hannon led off the game with a single.  His  hit was followed by a walk to Pastor Jim Smith and a single to  Lou Cegerra that loaded the bases.  Bob Richfield then lined a single off the third base bag that platted two runs.  Ernie Sharpe followed with a hard single which again loaded the bases.  Wayne Dinsmore drove in the next run with a sacrfice fly, which was followed  by rbi singles by Neal Matthews & John Edwinson.  Phil Hannon's second hit of the inning would drive in the sixth run.  Eliot responded with a run in the home half of the first, giving Danville a 6-1 lead after one.  Playing against the team that allowed the fewest runs in the division, Danville would score only six runs the rest of the game, as Eliot made a number of sparkling defensive plays.  Neither team would score again until the home half of the fourth inning, when Eliot pushed across three runs, to make it a 6-4 game.  Danville responded with one in the top of the 5th as Wayne Dinsmore singled home Bob Richfield who had also singled.  Eliot came back with two runs in their half of the 5th inning, and after 5 it was a one run game, with Danville holding a 7-6 lead.
Danville added two more in the top of the 6th.  Phil Clark led off with a hit for Danville, & Phil Hannon reached on a two base error.  Lou Cegerra would drive home one run with a sacrifice fly, before Ernie Sharpe's two out rbi single drove home the second run of the inning.  Going to the bottom of the 6th, Danville was leading by three.  But Elliot responded with five runs, to take an 11-9 lead into the 7th inning.

Clutch hitting and daring base running in the top of the 7th led to three runs, and a 12-11 Danville lead.  The inning started off with consecutive singles from Neal Matthews, John Edwinson, & Adam (a late season addition to the team) that loaded the bases.  It appeared Danville might break the game open.  But an infield pop up with no one out kept the runners from advancing.  Phil Hannon then hit a fly ball out to left center, an easy sacrifice fly for Neal Matthews to tag up & score.  But Danville would score two runs on this play, thanks to some daring base running by John Edwinson.  John, who was on second, tagged up & went to third, sliding in just ahead of the throw.  When the ball bounced away from the third baseman John jumped up & raced for home, & when the relay throw home was wide, Danville had tied the score.  On the play, Adam had advanced to second base.  With two outs and the game tied, Pastor Jim Smith ripped a single to center field to give Danville a one run lead.  But the game wasn't over, as Danville would have to protect a very slim lead.  It appeared the first batter for Eliot might tie the game when he hit a long fly ball to left center that seemed to be heading over the fence.  But the ball stayed in the park, & Bob Richfield made a good catch just in front of the fence.  The next batter grounded out to short, but then a two out single put the tieing run on first.  The next Eliot batter hit a line drive to deep left center that looked to be extra bases, but Bob Richfield made his second outstanding catch of the inning, giving Danville the
    12-11 victory!

Danville Wins 1st Round of Playoffs:

Danville defeated Durham Evangelical 3 in a best of 3 playoff round, 2-1.  Each game will be highlighted individually below:

       Game 1:  August 2nd

With an 11-1 record on the regular season, Danville hosted DEC 3 in a best of 3 semi-final playoff series.  DEC 3 had advanced to the semi-finals by defeating River of Live & Curtis Christian Lake in single elimination games.  DEC opened the game by scoring 4 runs in the first, but Danville reponded with 6 in the home half of the first, with Ernie Sharpe hitting the first of two home runs he would hit on the night.  Danville would add 4 runs in the second & another 4 in the third, to just 2 runs by DEC in the top of the third inning.  After 3 innings of play, the score was Danville 14 - Durham 6.  Danville appeared to be on the road to victory.  But then in the top of the 4th inning, Danville's defense fell apart and Durham scored 10 runs to take a 16-14 lead.  Danville failed to score in their half of the inning & then Durham scored a couple of more runs in the 5th to take a 18-14 lead.  Danville would fight back over the next two innings by shutting down Durham & by scoring a run in the bottom of the 5th & 2 runs in the home half of the 6th.  Entering the bottom of the 7th inning, Danville trailed by a run, 18-17.  Ernie Sharpe led off with a double & advanced on a sacrifice fly to third.  With one out, Phil Clark then tied the game up with a double.  It appeared Danville would win the game, but the next two batters failed to push the winning run across.  With darkness approaching, the game was suspended, to be picked up in the top of the 8th inning on Monday night, August 6th, at Millenium Field in Somersworth, where the second game of the series was to be played.

The game continued on Monday night at Millenium.  In the top of the 8th inning, Danville's defense once again made a couple of costly errors which allowed Durham to score 3 unearned runs.  Danville could only muster a single run in the bottom of the 8th inning, losing the first game of the series by a score of 21-19.  The defeat however, far from discouraging Danville, seemed to provide the motivation that had been lacking, as over the next two games they would outscore Durham 45-10.

       Game 2: August 6

Just minutes after losing game one, Danville as the visitors quickly began to take control of the game.  Danville came out smoking.  Phil Hannon led off the game with a triple.  Pastor Jim Smith, the next batter, singled him home.  Lou Cegerra followed with a single.  Bob Richfield walked, loading the bases.  Neal Matthews drove a run home with a sacrifice fly.  Ernie Sharpe followed with a two run double, which was followed by a 2 run home run by Wayne Dinsmore.  Six of the first seven Danville batters had reached base and scored.  Durham would score two runs in their first at bat.  In the second inning both teams were relatively quiet, as Danville would score just one run, while shutting out Durham.  In the third, Danville scored 3 runs, with the big hit being a two run home run by Wayne Dinsmore over the left field fence; his second of the game.  Danville again shut out Durham in the home half of the inning, thanks to a double play.  With a runner on second and one out, a ball was hit back to John Edwinson on the mound.  John turned to second & checked the runner back to second, before throwing to first.  As soon as the runner saw the throw go to first, he took off from third, but Neal Matthew's perfect throw from first to Ernie Sharpe at third ended the inning.
    That double play seemed to fire up Danville even more, as they put the game away with a ten run fourth inning;
3 of which scored on a towering home run over the fence in left center field by Phil Hannon.  Danville had evened the series at 1 game apiece, with a 20-5 victory.  Game three in Danville on the following night, would determine which team would advance to the finals in the C Divison.

       Game 3:  August 7th

Danville came out with the same fire they had exhibited the night before.
Durham would score first, by plating 3 runs in the top of the first inning.  But just as they had done the night before, Danville put up 6 runs in their first at bat to take a lead they would never relinquish.  Phil Hannon led off with a single, followed by a walk to Pastor Jim Smith.  After the next batter was retired, Bob Richfield hit a two run double bringing Danville to within one.
Ernie Sharpe, followed with a two run home run to left field that gave Danville the lead.  Wayne Dinsmore then hit an inside the park home run to right center, which was followed one out later by a home run to left by Phil Clark.
Danville had erased Durham's lead, and would never let up.  Over the next three innings, Danville shut out Durham, while scoring 3, 8, & 4 in those three frames, giving them a comfortable lead of 21-3 after 4 innings of play.  The final score would be 25-5.  Over those last two games, Danville played with a determination defensively & offensively which propelled them into the finals.  Danville scored 64 runs in the series, but the key difference in the last two games was Danville's defense which refused to let Durham challenge the lead after the early innings.  There were many hitting stars for Danville, but leading the power surge were Ernie Sharpe & Wayne Dinsmore who each hit 3 home runs in the series.

Danville now advances to the final playoff round against Eliot Bapitst 2.  Danville & Eliot split their two games during the regular season, with the home team winning by a run in their
final at bat.  The opening game will be at Millenium Park in Somersworth on Monday, August 13th.  Game two will be in Danville on August 14th, and a third game will also be at Danville on Thursday, August 16th if necessary.

    Danville Finishes Season with Win:

Danville concluded its regular season with a 20-10 victory over a short handed True Memorial Baptist team.  Fielding only 7 players, True Memorial was no match for Danville.  Leading the attack for Danville were Bob Richfield, 4-4 with a HR & 4 rbis;  Wayne Dinsmore who was a perfect 5-5 with
3 rbis; Neal Matthews who was 3-5 with 3 rbis; Ernie Sharpe who was 4-4 with 5 runs scored and an rbi; and Lou Cegerra who was 3-4 with an rbi.  The win closed out the regular season for Danville, who compiled an 11-1 record during the regular season.

    Danville Clinches C Division:

Danville hosted Eliot Baptist on July 24th with the C Division championship on the line.  Eliot had defeated Danville earlier in the season, for Danville's lone defeat.

With the Division championship on the line, and home field advantage throughout the upcoming playoffs for the winner, the game had a playoff atmosphere from the very first pitch.

The first inning was scoreless for both teams, and then Danville took an early 2-0 lead in the second.  Bob Richfield led off the frame with a walk. Neal Matthews then singled and Bob husted to third base.  When the third baseman lost the ball Bob dashed for home, sliding across the plate for the game's first run.  Joe Burleigh then singled home Neal Matthews who had advanced to second on the play.  Eliot tied the game in the top of the 3rd inning on a two run home run.  The game remained knotted until Danville batted in the 4th inning.  Singles by Lou Cegerra & Bob Richfield set the stage for a three run homer by Wayne Dinsmore.  Phil Clark then followed Wayne's home run, with one of his own.  The back to back home runs gave Danville a 6-2 lead.  The lead did not last long, as Eliot's bats came to life in the 5th inning, as they rallied for 8 runs, grabbing a 10-6 lead.  But Danville came right back in their half of the inning to score 4 runs, tieing the game at 10 apiece.  Ernie Sharpe led off the inning with Danville's third home run of the night.  Then after two were out, Pastor Jim Smith drew a walk which set the stage for back to back rbi doubles by Lou Cegerra & Bob Richfield, & an rbi single by Neal Matthews that tied the game.  The two teams had battled for five innings, and were deadlocked at 10.  Eliot regained the lead with a single run in the 6th inning, only to see Danville score 2 runs in the home half of the 6th to once again take the lead.  In that 6th inning, Joe Burleigh led off with a single, & then with two outs Derrick Yeager singled & advanced to second on an outfield error.  With two outs and runners on second & third, Phil Hannon came up with a clutch two out single that drove in 2 runs.  After 6 innings of play, Danville had a 12-11 lead, and were just three outs from clinching the C Division.  But Eliot's first batter in the top of the 7th inning hit a long home run to centerfield, and once again the game was tied.  Eliot would not score again in the 7th, so Danville came to bat needing a run to win the game.  When Lou Cegerra led off the home half with a single, it appeared Danville would score that run.  But the next three batters were retired, and the game was headed for extra innings, tied at 12.  Eliot did not score in the 8th inning, setting the stage for a dramatic victory in the home half of the inning.  Phil Clark led off the frame for Danville with a single.  With one out, John Edwinson then singled, sending Phil to third.  This brought Ernie Sharpe to the plate, who had already hit a home run.
Eliot decided to give Ernie an intentional walk, loading the bases & taking their chances with Derrick Yeager.  That decision quickly back fired, as Derrick roped a single to center on the first pitch plating Phil Clark with the winning run, and the C Division championship.

Pastor Smith commenting on the game, said: "It was an exciting game to play between two evenly matched teams.  Should we play Eliot for the championship, it will be a very tight series.  We split our two games during the regular season, with each team winning by a run.  Tonight, each team hit 3 home runs.  These are two very good and competive teams.  It doesn't get any more exciting than what we had tonight."

    Danville Improves to 9-1:

Danville hosted Curtis Lake Christian Church on Tuesday, July 17th.  Curtis Lake, in its initial season in the league, entered the game with a 2-7 record.  Danville opened the night in first place, with a record of 8 wins against one set back.  It was a sunny night, and the game featured a great spirit of Christian fellowship between the two teams.  Despite falling behind early, Curtis Lake exhibited termendous sportmanship.  The game was actually decided in the first inning, as Danville erupted for 11 runs in their first at bat.  In their initial at bat, Neal Matthews & Joe Burleigh both blasted three runs home runs to propel Danville to an 11-1 lead after one inning of play.  Contributing to the
hitting attack for Danville were Pastor Jim Smith, a perfect four for four with four runs scored, and Wayne Dinsmore & Ernie Sharpe who both went 3 for 4.
The win kept Danville in first place, and sets up Thursdays game (July 19th) at home against Eliot Baptist (9-2) who has handed Danville its lone defeat of the season.

    Danville Wins at Home:

Danville began a four game homestand which will close at the regular season with a  23-12 win over Durham Evangelical Church (DEC).  Durham opened the game by scoring five runs in the first inning, aided by three Danville errors.  But thier lead was short lived, as Danville's bat were equal to the challenge.  Danville posted 7 in the first inning, with the key hit being a three run home run by Ernie Sharpe which gave Danville a lead they would never relinquish.  Danville's defense shut out DEC in the second inning, and then Phil Hannon led off the home half for Danville with a long home run to left center.  Danville would add three more runs in the inning to push the lead to 11-5 after two innings of play.  Danville would have another four run inning in their fourth to push the lead to 15-5.   But DEC, as they showed in their first game with Danville, does not give up.  A four run rally in the top of the fifth cut Danville's lead to 15-9.  But as they had done in the first inning, Danville erased DEC's four runs by scoring six of their own, to take a commanding 21-9 lead.
Danville added two in the sixth inning, and Durham closed out the scoring with a three run seventh inning, for a final score of 23-12.  The defensive stars of the game for Danville were Bob Richfield & Derrick Yeager.  Bob made two diving catches in left center field, and Derrick made some sparkling plays at short, nabbing DEC runners by a heartbeat with his strong throwing arm.  The hitting stars for Danville were many.  Ernie Sharpe was 3-3 with a home run & 5 rbi's.  Bob Richfield was a perfect 5-5 & 2 rbi's.  Phil Hannon was 4-5 with 4 runs scored & two rbi's in the leadoff spot.  Phil Clark was 3-4 with
2 rbi's.  Lou Cegerra & Pastor Jim Smith were both 3-5 with 4 runs & 3 runs scored respectively, with each contributing an rbi.  The win improved Danville's record to 8-1 on the season with three regular season games remaining.

    Danville Wins by Forfeit:

Danville's games against Curtis Lake Christian Church on July 2nd was decided by forfeit, as Curtis Lake failed to field a team.

    Danville Wins a Tight Game:

Danville went on the road to Summersworth on July 1st, and came away with a win; defeating True Memorial Baptist 8-6.  Neal Matthews drove home Lou Cegerra in the top of the first to put the visitors up a run.  True Memorial tied the game in the home half of the second.  Danville then scored two in the top of the third inning on consecutive sacrifice flies by Lou Cegerra & Neal Matthews.  True Memorial responded with one in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-2 after four innings of play.  Danville added two more in the fifth inning to go up by three runs, only to see True Memorial rally for four runs in the home half of the sixth inning.  After six innings of play, Danville trailed 6-5.  But Danville rallied for three in the top of the seventh with Phil Hannon & John Edwinson driving in key runs.  Danville's defense shut out True Memorial in the bottom of the seventh, securing the 8-5 victory for Danville.  Wayne Dinsmore & Phil Hannon were key offensive players for Danville.  Wayne was 4-5 with 4 runs scored, and Phil was a perfect
5-5 with one run scored and two rbi's.

    Danville Defeats Durham 24-18

Danville continued its hot hitting, with a 24-18 win over Durham Evangelical, in a game shortened to six innings.  In many ways it was two games in one, as Danville jumped out to an early 21-5 lead after 3 innings.  Danville came out swinging in the first inning, putting up nine runs; 3 of them scoring on a home run by Joe Burleigh.  Danville added two in the second, & then pushed 10 runners across the plate in the third inning.  It appeared Danville would come out with a lopsided win.  But over the final 3 innings, Danville bats would grow cold & would just score 3 more runs, while Durham's bats began to come to life.  Durham scored 3 runs in both the 4th & 5th innings, and then pushed 7 runs across the plate in the 6th inning, to make the final score 24-18.  After the game, Pastor Smith commented: "Durham showed their character and heart tonight by not quitting when they were down early in the game."  With a total of 42 runs scored on the night, the game was called after six innings due to darkness.
Leading the offense barrage for Danville were Joe Burleigh (4-5, including a home run, 4 runs scored, & 4 rbi's); Lou Cegerra (4-6, 3 runs scored, & 4 rbi's); Pastor Jim Smith,5-6, 4 runs scored, & 3 rbi's); and Derrick Yeager (3-6; 4 runs scored, & 2 rbi's).  The victory pushed Danville's record to 5-1, with two road games coming up the week of July 4th.

    Danville Improves to 4-1:

Danville's bat were blazing on a hot summer evening, as they defeated River of Life 26-4.  Danville put the game away early scoring six runs in the first and seven runs in the second to take a 13-1 lead after two.  Danville would score at least two runs in every inning they batted.  On a night where 26 Danville runners crossed homeplate, there were many hitting stars.  Lou Cegerra & Bob Richfield, Danville's # 3 & # 4 hitters were both a perfect 5 for 5 at the plate.  Lou put Danville up 3-1 in the first inning with a three run home run.  Lou knocked in six runs on the evening while scoring 5 runs himself.  Bob drove in 5 runs and scored 5 himself.  Bob had two extra base hits, a home run and a ground rule double that just missed being his second home run of the game.  Wayne Dinsmore also homered for Danville, hitting a grand slam in the 7 runs second inning.  For the night, Wayne was 3-4 with 7 RBI's and 3 runs scored.  Pastor Smith scratched out four hits and scored four times for Danville.  Also coming up with a big night for Danville was Bill Monaco. Making his 2007 debut for Danville, the former Duke Blue Devil was 3 for 4 on the night.  Liz Smith also made her 2007 debut for Danville by legging out a single in her first at bat.

    Danville Wins in Maine:

Danville traveled to Sanford Maine for its game against River of Live (ROL).  The start of the game was delayed due to rain showers, and shortened to five innings, with Danville winning 19-8.
Danville opened the game by scoring two runs in the first inning on Lou Cegerra's home run.  ROL responded with four in the home half, to take a 4-2 lead.  Danville countered with five runs in the second and three runs in the third inning for a 10-5 lead after three inning.  In the top of the fourth, Danville scored six runs to push the lead to 16-5, only to see ROL respond with 3 in their half of the inning to cut the score to 16-8.  Danville scored three in the top of the fifth, and then shut out ROL in the home half of the fifth, for a final score of 19-8.  There were many hitting stars for Danville.  Lou Cegerra & Neal Matthews both went 3-4 with 3 RBI's.  Joe Burleigh
    (3 runs scored), Phil Hannon (2 RBI's),
& Pastor Jim Smith (4 runs scored) also went 3-4.  Ken Burleigh was a perfect 3-3 with two critical 2 outs hits that accounted for 2 RBI's.  Phil Clark also had a perfect 3-3 night with 3 RBI's.  John Edwinson went 2-4 with 2 RBI's.
Joe Burleigh was the defensive star of the night as he recorded two outs as a catcher in the 4th inning.  One was on a pop up that he hustled to catch, & the second was on a tag play at the plate.  After the game Pastor Smit commented, "It was a good win a gainst a solid ROL team which featured several key two outs hits in the 2nd & 3rd innings which gave us an early lead."  The win improved Danville's record to 3-1 for the season.

    Elliot Rally Defeats Danville:

Elliot Baptist rallied for 5 runs after two were out in the home half of the 7th inning, to defeat Danville 12-11.  With a runner on and two outs, and Danville holding an 11-7 lead, it appeared Danville would win its 3rd straight game.  Elliot however refused to quit, and rallied for five runs, the last two coming on a bases loaded single to right field.  The game was a close game all night.  Danville scored two runs in the top of the first, on the strength of four straight hits by Pastor Jim Smith, Lou Cegerra,Bob Richfield, and Wayne Dinsmore.  Elliot Baptist came back with four in the home half of the inning, which Danville countered by scoring four in the 2nd inning.  Danville's second inning rally was sparked by consecutive hits from Larry Rollins, Trevor Phillips, Derrick Yeager, Pastor Jim Smith, and Lou Cegerra.  Elliot would score two in the third inning, to tie the game at six.  In the top of the fourth inning Danville scored four runs to take a 10-6 lead.  As he did in the second inning, Larry Rollins began the four run rally with a base hit.  With one out Derick Yeager singled, Pastor Jim Smith walked, and Lou Cegerra followed with a double that cleared the bases.  Bob Richfield's hit scored Lou for Danville's final run of the inning.  The two teams traded runs in the 5th inning, with the lone hit for Danville being a triple by Phil Hannon.  After five innings, the score was 11-7, where it stayed until the bottom of the 7th inning.  It was a good game between two evenly matched teams, which also saw some solid defense.  The Elliot outfielders ran down several hard hit balls, while Danville's defesne turned in some sparkling plays.

    Danville Wins a Clean Game:

In a rematch with thier opening night opponents, Danville Baptist defeated Graced Community 8-1.  However, it was an entirely different ball game.  Pastor Smith had this to say about the game: "I believe it was the cleanest game we have played in seven years in this league.  Both teams had good pitching and excellent defense, and with two outs in the top of the 7th inning, it was still a 3-1 game."  The first 3 1/2 innings were scoreless, as Danville only had four baserunners in four at bats.  In the bottom of the 4th inning, Grace Community scored the first run of the game, to take a 1-0 lead.  John Edwinson led off the 5th inning with a walk for Danville, and he would later score on a fielder's choice.  In the top of the 6th inning, Danville pushed two more runs across the plate to take a 3-1 lead.  Phil Clark drew a lead off walk for Danville.  He was then forced at 2nd base by Derrick Yeager.  Pastor Jim Smith then singled, putting runners at 1st and 2nd.  Bob Richfield hit a double to left that scored Derrick.  Dave Mill followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Pastor Smith from 3rd base.  When the first two Danville batters made out in the 7th, it appeared they would take the field for the bottom of the seventh, holding a 3-1 lead.  But with two outs Trevor Phillips hit a pop up toward the first baseman, that fell between him & the pitcher for a hit.  This was the break Danville had been looking for, as the next five batters, Wayne Dinsmore, Phil Hannon, Phil Clark, Derrick Yeager, & Pastor Smith all lined solid hits, pushing across five insurance runs.  It was a rare softball game that featured good pitching and solid defense.  The most spectacular play of the night was turned in by Phil Clark at 3rd base for Danville, who dived to his right to catch a hard hit ground ball, and then from his knees threw out the batter at first.  It was also a game that exhibited what the league is all about, with good fellowship and sportmanship between these two teams.

    Danville Wins Season Opener

Danville began the 2007 season with a 31-10 victory over Grace Community 2.  Trailing by one after a half inning, Danville quickly took the lead, when its number three batter, Lou Cegarra hit a two run home run.  Danville would add another nine runs in the inning, all scoring after two were out.  Grace Community came back with six runs in the top of the second, to make it an 11-7 game.  Danville put the game away with 10 runs in the fourth inning, with two runs scoring on a booming home run by Neal Matthews.  In a night where every Danville hitter had at least two hits, Bob Richfield was a perfect five for five at the plate.
